Termination of pregnancy for patients travelling from Kolhapur

Kolhapur to us is a road journey of about five hours, and our own car will make it for you, in both directions, free of cost. Pai Hospital is at Vaddem, Vasco-da-Gama. The care here is lawful and licensed, the price is fixed and itemised before anything begins, and nobody will ask you to justify your decision. Telephone or send a WhatsApp message first and we will plan the day around you.

What you are most likely worried about

Not the procedure. The talk. Kolhapur, like most cities of its size, is a place where families, workplaces and neighbourhoods overlap, and where a single sighting can travel.

Your identity is protected by law, and protected here in practice. Nothing about your visit is written where another person can see it, discussed outside the consulting room, or shared with anybody — not your family, not your husband or partner, not your employer, not somebody who telephones asking after you. Our staff are trained over years to be non-judgemental, and gossip is a trained discipline here: actively stopped, not merely disapproved of. Privacy is designed into how the visit runs rather than promised in a policy.

If you are unmarried, you are completely entitled to this care and it is completely lawful. You need nobody's permission but your own — not a husband's, not a partner's, not your parents'. Many of the women we see are unmarried and most have never been admitted anywhere before. You will be welcomed and supported through the whole visit, from the first phone call to the journey home.

Why patients from Kolhapur come to Goa for this

Partly the distance, which puts the visit outside the reach of anyone who knows you. Partly because it is one journey and one building: the scan, the assessment, the certification, the procedure and the follow-up advice all happen in the same place on the same day, rather than being spread between a scan centre, a laboratory and a clinic. And partly because the journey itself stops being an obstacle once someone else is driving.

What happens when you get here

Your scan, in our own department, the day you arrive

The ultrasound that decides how many weeks you are, where the pregnancy is sitting and which method suits you is done by our own doctors in this building, on arrival. Nothing waits on an outside report.

Three registered doctors under one roof

Where a more advanced pregnancy needs a second doctor's opinion before it can be certified, that opinion is given here by this hospital's own registered doctors, on the same visit.

A government MTP licence and the prescribed consent form

The theatre is licensed by the government specifically for termination of pregnancy. The government's prescribed consent form must be signed first, and that form exists only at licensed premises — a pharmacy may not dispense the medicines without it. It protects you, and it is one plain sign of a proper facility.

Scan-guided surgery and 100% disposable instruments

A surgical procedure is done with the doctor watching the uterus on the scan screen throughout, and every instrument and consumable that touches you is single-use.

An ectopic pregnancy is a separate emergency

Sometimes the scan finds a pregnancy growing outside the womb, usually inside a fallopian tube. That is an ectopic pregnancy, and it needs to be said plainly: it is not a termination of pregnancy. It is a different medical condition and it is an emergency. A pregnancy cannot continue in a tube, and the surgery that treats it is done to protect your life, under entirely different considerations. Finding it in time is one of the reasons the scan comes before anything else.

Why sooner is better

Earlier in a pregnancy this is simpler for you: more methods remain available, less intervention is needed, and you recover more quickly. As the weeks go by the choices narrow and what is left is a larger undertaking. The MTP Act sets the outer limits and we will tell you exactly where you stand within them — but the reason not to put the journey off is a clinical one.

What it will cost

Telephone us with a recent ultrasound and we can give you a close estimate. It remains an estimate until you are examined, because nobody can price an assessment that has not happened. On arrival our own certified doctors examine you and repeat the investigations, so the exact situation and gestation are known.

Only then are you given a precise, itemised cost — hospital, medical, pharmacy and laboratory, each stated separately — and that becomes a promised package in rupees. Hospital fees are taken in full in advance and the figure does not move at the end. The figure you are given is the figure you pay.

How long does it take to get to you from Kolhapur?

About five hours by road. There is no useful direct train, and a flight is not worth it over that distance.

Do you really send a car into Maharashtra?

Yes. The car service covers anywhere in Goa and the border states, both ways, free of cost. Ask for it when you telephone.

Will anyone in Kolhapur find out?

No. Nothing is written where others can see it, nothing is discussed outside the room, and nothing is given to anyone who telephones asking about you.

Will the bill be bigger than the estimate?

No. After you are examined here you are given an itemised figure, taken in advance, and that promised package is what you pay.
