Termination of pregnancy for patients travelling from Mumbai

If what you want most is for nobody to find out, you are not unusual, and you are not doing anything wrong. That is the reason most patients from Mumbai come to us. Pai Hospital is at Vaddem, Vasco-da-Gama, about an hour and a half from Mumbai by air, and Goa's airport is minutes from our door. Nobody you know is in our waiting room. Call or WhatsApp us first and we will plan the whole visit around you.

The question you are really asking

Almost everyone who telephones us asks the medical questions second. The first one, asked quietly or not asked at all, is: will anyone find out? So let us answer that one first.

Your identity is protected by law, and protected here in practice. Nothing about your visit is written where anyone else can see it, discussed outside the room, or shared with anyone — not your family, not your partner, not your employer, not anyone who telephones asking about you. Our staff are trained over years to be non-judgemental, and gossip is not merely discouraged here, it is a trained discipline. That training is why the promise holds when you are standing in front of us rather than reading about it.

If you are unmarried you are completely entitled to this care and it is completely lawful. You do not need your husband's, your partner's or your parents' permission. The decision and the consent are yours. Many of the women who come to us are unmarried, and for a great many of them this is the first time they have ever been admitted to a hospital for anything at all. You will be welcomed, not processed.

Why patients from Mumbai travel for this

Mumbai is enormous and still, for most people who live in it, a small world — one building, one office floor, one family circle, one chemist who has known your mother for twenty years. Distance is the simplest privacy there is. A flight down and back fits inside two or three days, and a few days in Goa is the least remarkable thing a person from Mumbai can do.

What happens here

Your scan is done here, on the day you arrive

The ultrasound that decides everything — how many weeks, where the pregnancy is sitting, which method suits you — is done in our own department, by our own doctors, in this building, on the day you arrive. You are not sent out to a scan centre and back with an envelope.

Three registered doctors, under one roof

The law requires a second doctor's opinion before a more advanced pregnancy can be certified. Pai Hospital has three registered doctors on staff, so that opinion can be given here, in the same building, on the same visit.

A government MTP licence — and the form that goes with it

A termination requires the consent form prescribed by the Government to be signed, and that form exists only at licensed premises; a pharmacy cannot dispense the medicines without it. The form is there for your protection, and the fact that it is on the table in front of you is one plain sign that you are in a proper facility.

Real-time sonographic guidance, and 100% disposable instruments

Where a surgical procedure is needed, the doctor watches the uterus on the scan screen throughout it rather than working by feel. Every instrument and consumable that touches you is single-use.

What the scan may find instead

Occasionally the scan shows a pregnancy growing outside the womb, usually in a fallopian tube. That is an ectopic pregnancy, and it is important to be clear about it: it is not a termination. It is a different medical condition and an emergency. A pregnancy cannot continue in a tube, and treating it is surgery done to protect your life, governed by entirely different considerations. Finding it, quickly, is one of the main reasons the scan is done before anything else.

Sooner is simpler, and that is a medical statement

The earlier in a pregnancy this is done, the simpler it is for you: more options are open, less intervention is needed, recovery is quicker. Every week that passes narrows what is possible and makes what remains a bigger undertaking. The MTP Act sets the outer limits and we will tell you honestly where you stand within them — but the reason to telephone today rather than next month is a medical one, not a legal one.

What it will cost, and why the figure does not move

Telephone us with a recent ultrasound and we can usually give you a close estimate. It is only an estimate, because nobody can price an examination that has not happened yet. When you arrive, our own certified doctors assess you, examine you and repeat the investigations, so the exact situation and the exact stage are known.

Only then do we give you a precise, itemised figure — hospital, medical, pharmacy and laboratory, each stated separately. That figure becomes a promised package in rupees. Hospital fees are taken in full in advance and the amount does not change at the end. The figure you are given is the figure you pay.

Will anyone in Mumbai find out?

No. Nothing about your visit is written where anyone else can see it, discussed outside the room, or given to anyone who asks — including family and employers.

I am not married. Can I still be treated?

Yes, completely, and lawfully. You do not need anyone's permission but your own, and nobody here will look at you a certain way.

Which Goa airport should I fly into?

Dabolim (GOI) if you can — it is a few kilometres from the hospital. Mopa (GOX) works too but adds about an hour and a half of road at this end.

Do I need my own transport once I land?

No. Our car collects you from the airport and takes you back, free of cost. Say so when you call.

Why do you say the earlier the better?

Because earlier is genuinely simpler — more options, less intervention, quicker recovery. It is a medical reason, not a scheduling one.
