When should I see a gynaecologist?

See a gynaecologist if your periods are very heavy, very painful or irregular, if you bleed between periods or after menopause, or if you have lower tummy pain, unusual discharge or trouble getting pregnant. Bleeding after menopause should always be checked soon.

Are heavy periods normal?

Periods that soak through pads every hour or two, last longer than a week, or leave you tired and weak are not something you have to live with. They can be caused by fibroids, hormone changes or other treatable problems. Read about heavy bleeding.

Do fibroids always need surgery?

No. Many fibroids cause no trouble and only need watching. Treatment is needed when they cause heavy bleeding, pain, pressure symptoms or problems getting pregnant. Options range from medicines to surgery that removes only the fibroids. Read about fibroids.

What is laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery?

It is an operation done through a few small cuts using a thin camera, instead of one large cut. It usually means less pain afterwards, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to normal life than open surgery. Read about laparoscopic surgery.

How long will I stay in hospital after surgery?

It depends on the operation. After many keyhole procedures women go home within a day or two, while bigger operations need a longer stay. The doctor will tell you what to expect for your own operation before you decide.

Is a hysterectomy the only answer for my problem?

What is PCOS, and can it be treated?
