How to choose a safe abortion provider

You deserve safe, dignified care

If you are thinking about ending a pregnancy, the most important thing is not how quickly or easily it can be arranged, but whether the care is genuinely safe. A safe provider protects your health, your privacy and your dignity, from the first message to the day you go home. In India this care is lawful under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, and it should always be given at a government-licensed facility by a qualified doctor. This guide walks you through exactly what to look for, so you can ask the right questions and choose with confidence.

A word before anything else: you will be treated with respect here, whoever you are. Many of the women we care for are unmarried, and that changes nothing — the care is lawful, confidential and given with the same warmth to everyone. You do not need to explain or justify your situation to be looked after well.

Start with the licence

The single most important marker of a safe provider is a government MTP licence. Under the MTP Act, only an approved, registered facility with a trained doctor may provide this care. A licensed centre has been inspected and holds itself to a standard; an unlicensed, backstreet arrangement has not, and that is where women come to harm. It is perfectly reasonable to ask, plainly, whether a facility is a registered MTP centre. A genuine provider will not be offended by the question — it is exactly the right thing to ask. A qualified doctor should provide the care

Ask who will actually look after you. Safe care is provided by a qualified doctor — not by a chemist over a counter, not by an unqualified person, and never by a stranger sending pills through the post. A proper provider has a doctor who assesses you, explains your options honestly, and stays responsible for your care and your follow-up. If you cannot find out who the doctor is, treat that as a warning sign.

An ultrasound comes first, every time

Before any treatment, a safe provider will do an ultrasound scan. This is not a formality. The scan confirms the pregnancy is where it should be and rules out a pregnancy growing in the wrong place, such as an ectopic pregnancy, which can be dangerous and needs completely different treatment. The scan also lets the doctor assess your situation properly and recommend the right, safe approach for you. Any provider willing to give treatment without seeing you and scanning you first is cutting the one corner that matters most. Single-use disposables and a real operating theatre

Safety lives in the details you cannot read on a signboard. Ask whether single-use, disposable instruments are used, so that nothing is reused between patients. Ask whether there is a real, equipped operating theatre on the premises, with proper sterility, monitoring and the ability to manage any complication should one arise. A licensed hospital with its own theatre can look after you completely, under one roof, rather than sending you elsewhere if something needs attention. These are the quiet markers that separate genuinely safe care from a risky shortcut.

Privacy is part of safety

Good care is confidential care. You should feel that your visit, your records and your conversations are kept private, and that you are spoken to without judgement. A provider who gossips, who is careless with your details, or who makes you feel ashamed is not giving you the standard you deserve. Privacy is not an extra here — it is part of what makes care safe and humane.

Honest guidance, not pressure

A trustworthy doctor gives you honest guidance and lets you decide. There are broadly two routes for ending a pregnancy — the medicine route and a simple procedure — and which one is appropriate depends entirely on your own assessment. You can read in general terms about the medicine route and the procedure route, but please do not try to arrange either on your own. Medicines bought and taken without supervision, or a procedure done in an unsafe place, are exactly how women end up in danger. A safe provider explains your options clearly, answers your questions, and never rushes or pressures you into a decision.

One thing a safe provider will never do

A lawful provider will never offer to tell you the sex of the pregnancy, and will never let such a thing influence any decision. Determining the sex of an unborn child is illegal in India, and any facility that hints at it is one to walk away from immediately. Safe, ethical care and that offer never sit together.

Your checklist of questions to ask

When you contact any provider, these are fair and useful questions to ask. Is this a government-licensed MTP centre? Who is the qualified doctor who will look after me? Will an ultrasound be done before anything else? Are single-use, disposable instruments used? Is there a proper operating theatre on site? Will my visit be kept private? A confident, caring provider will welcome every one of these questions. Hesitation, evasion, or an offer to simply post you some medicine are all reasons to look elsewhere.
