Pregnancy and delivery at Pai Hospital: your questions answered
Pai Hospital cares for you through pregnancy and delivery, from your first check-up to the birth and after. Deliveries, emergencies and surgery are handled 24 hours a day, and our outpatient clinic runs from 10 am to 7 pm. If you are travelling from elsewhere in Goa, we can send a car for you, free of cost.

Your questions
When should I first see a doctor after a positive pregnancy test?
As soon as you can. An early visit lets the doctor confirm the pregnancy, check that it is growing in the right place, start the right supplements and plan your scans and tests. Call us and we will give you an appointment.
Which scans and tests will I need during pregnancy?
Most women have a few ultrasound scans and routine blood and urine tests at set stages. The doctor will tell you exactly which ones you need and when, based on your own health and your pregnancy.
What is a high-risk pregnancy, and can you look after it?
A pregnancy is called high-risk when the mother or the baby needs closer watching, for example because of high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems, twins or problems in an earlier pregnancy. We look after high-risk pregnancies and plan extra checks with you. Read about high-risk pregnancy.
Can I deliver my baby at Pai Hospital at any time of day or night?
Yes. Deliveries, emergencies and surgery are handled 24 hours a day. Keep our number saved so you can call as soon as labour starts, or whenever you are worried about anything.
Will I need a caesarean section?
Not necessarily. Many women deliver normally. A caesarean is advised only when it is safer for you or your baby, and the doctor will explain the reason before any decision is made.
What should I do in an emergency during pregnancy?
Call us straight away if you have bleeding, severe pain in the tummy, leaking fluid, a bad headache with blurred vision, or if your baby is moving less than usual. Do not wait for your next appointment.
Will you tell me whether my baby is a boy or a girl?
No. Finding out or disclosing the sex of the baby is illegal in India under the PCPNDT Act, 1994. We do not carry out or offer sex determination of any kind, at any stage.
Can someone bring me to the hospital from another town in Goa?
Yes. For scans, procedures and admission we can send a car to bring you to the hospital and take you home again, free of cost. Mention it when you call.
Do you advise on family planning after the baby is born?
Yes. The doctor can talk you through the contraception options that suit you after delivery. Read about contraception.
