Recovery after an abortion

After an abortion, some cramping, light bleeding and tiredness for a few days is normal, and most women return to their usual life soon after. Dr Mayur Pai explains what ordinary recovery looks like, how to care for yourself, and the clear warning signs that mean you should call us or come back in.

Recovery is usually straightforward

An abortion carried out properly, in a hospital, by a trained team, is a safe and routine part of women’s healthcare, and recovery from it is usually straightforward. In the days that follow, your body settles back to its normal rhythm. Knowing in advance what is ordinary — and what is not — takes away a great deal of worry, so that you can rest, look after yourself, and get back to your life with confidence.

How recovery feels depends a little on which kind of care you had, whether it was the medicine route or a short procedure. Because of this, the honest answer to many recovery questions is the same: come in and let us assess you, so the guidance you receive fits your own situation rather than a general rule.

What is normal in the first days

Bleeding. Some bleeding, a little like a period and sometimes with small clots, is expected and settles gradually. Use sanitary pads rather than tampons or a menstrual cup for now, as this keeps things clean and lets us judge the flow if you have any concern.

Cramping. Cramps, similar to period pain, are common as the womb returns to its usual size. A warm compress on the lower tummy, rest, and any pain-relief medicine we advise usually keep this comfortable. It should ease day by day, not worsen.

Tiredness and emotions. Feeling tired or tender for a few days is normal. Your feelings may move about too — relief, sadness, or simply flatness — and all of these are ordinary human responses, which we come back to below.

Looking after yourself

Give yourself a little kindness in the first days. Rest when you can, drink enough water, and eat simple, nourishing meals; iron-rich foods help your body recover after any bleeding. Avoid heavy lifting and hard exercise for a short while. Take any medicine we prescribe exactly as we direct, and finish the full course even once you feel well. To lower the chance of infection while the body heals, it is wise to avoid sexual intercourse, swimming, and soaking in a bath or pool until we tell you at your review that it is fine. Showers are perfectly all right.

Getting back to normal life

Most women feel like themselves again within a few days and return to work and family life soon after. Listen to your body rather than the clock: if something still feels heavy or sore, ease back gently. We will tell you at your follow-up when it is safe to resume exercise, intercourse, and your full routine, based on how your own recovery is going. There is no prize for rushing.

Your feelings matter too

Recovery is not only physical. Some women feel relief, some feel low for a little while, and many feel a mixture — and none of it is wrong. If low feelings linger or feel heavy, please tell us; support is part of your care, not an afterthought. We treat every woman with the same warmth and privacy, whether she is married or unmarried. This care is lawful in India, and your dignity and confidentiality are ours to protect.

Fertility returns quickly — plan ahead

An important point many women do not expect: fertility can return very soon, often before your next period arrives. That means it is possible to conceive again quite quickly. If you do not wish to, it is wise to plan contraception straight away, and we are happy to talk this through and start it at the same visit. If and when you do want to try for a baby in future, an uncomplicated abortion does not stand in the way.

The follow-up visit matters

A short follow-up visit is an important part of safe care. It lets us confirm that everything is complete and that you are healing well, and it gives you the chance to ask anything on your mind. Please do keep this appointment even if you feel completely fine. Whether your care was the medicine route or a short procedure, this review is how we make sure the chapter is properly and safely closed.

Warning signs — call us or come back

Most recoveries are smooth, but you should know the signs that mean you need us promptly. Call us or come back in if you have very heavy bleeding that soaks through pads quickly, or bleeding that keeps getting worse rather than better; severe tummy pain that pain-relief does not ease, or strong pain on one side; a fever, chills, or a foul-smelling discharge; feeling faint or dizzy; or ongoing signs of pregnancy such as continued nausea. Sudden, severe one-sided pain with dizziness needs urgent attention, as it can point to an ectopic pregnancy. Trust your instinct: if something feels wrong, it is always right to contact us.

Where this care happens

This guide is by Dr Mayur Pai, MBBS, MS (Obstetrics & Gynaecology). Pai Hospital in Goa is a government-licensed facility, with its own operating theatre and its own trained team, so your assessment, treatment and follow-up all happen in one trusted place, with your care and dignity looked after at every step.

Getting started

If you have a question about recovery or about abortion care, simply call or message us; you can share your situation privately and we will guide you on the next step. Please understand that a phone or online consultation can only tell us whether treatment is feasible and what to do next — the treatment itself is never done remotely. To receive any abortion service you must come to the hospital in Goa in person; we do not send medicines by post or courier, and nothing is done by phone. This article is for education only and is not personal medical advice; please consult your doctor about your own situation.

How long does recovery after an abortion take?

It varies from woman to woman and depends on the kind of care you had. Many feel like themselves within a few days, with light bleeding and mild cramps settling gradually. The honest guidance is to come in and be assessed, so the advice fits your own recovery rather than a general rule.

What warning signs mean I should come back in?

Very heavy bleeding that soaks pads quickly or keeps worsening, severe pain that pain-relief does not ease, strong one-sided pain, a fever or chills, a foul-smelling discharge, feeling faint, or ongoing pregnancy symptoms. If any of these occur, call us or come back in without delay.

When can I return to work and normal life?

Most women return to their routine soon after, often within a few days. Listen to your body and avoid heavy lifting and hard exercise at first. We will tell you at your follow-up when it is safe to resume exercise, intercourse and your full routine.

Can I get pregnant again soon, and how do I prevent it?

Yes. Fertility can return quickly, sometimes before your next period, so it is possible to conceive again soon. If you do not wish to, we can discuss and start contraception at the same visit, and plan for the future when you are ready.

Do I have to come to the hospital, and is transport available?

Yes. All abortion care is given in person at the hospital in Goa; a phone or online consultation only tells us whether treatment is feasible. Free patient transport is available from across Goa and nearby areas, so reaching us is not a barrier.
