Why safety is the whole question

If you are reading this, you may be facing a decision that feels heavy and very private. We want to begin with reassurance: when abortion care is done properly, in the right place and by the right hands, it is a well-understood, routine part of women's healthcare. Most of the fear around it comes not from the care itself, but from care done in the wrong way — in secret, without a doctor. This article explains, in plain language, what actually makes an abortion safe and legal, so you know what to look for and what to expect.

A word for those who are not married: this is lawful care in India, and you are welcome here. We treat every woman the same, with the same privacy and the same respect, whatever her age or circumstances. You do not need to explain or justify anything to receive dignified care.

A government-licensed facility, working within the law

The first marker of safety is where the care happens. A safe abortion is carried out at a facility that is licensed by the government for this purpose, working within the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. That licence is not a formality. It means the place has been checked for the equipment, the trained staff and the standards needed to look after you if everything is straightforward, and also if it is not. A pharmacy counter, or a stranger's advice found online, is none of these things.

Care by a qualified doctor

The second marker is who provides the care. A safe abortion is carried out by a qualified doctor who is trained for it, with a trained team alongside. This matters because a pregnancy is not always exactly where, or how, it is expected to be. A doctor examines you, reads your scan, asks about your health and any medicines you take, and only then advises the right and safe way forward for you. It starts with an ultrasound

Before anything is decided, safe care begins with an ultrasound scan. We do not guess. The scan confirms that the pregnancy is inside the womb, and not sitting somewhere dangerous such as in the tube, which is a different and urgent situation needing quite different treatment. It also lets the doctor plan your care safely. This is exactly why care cannot be arranged over the phone alone — the safe path can only be chosen after you have been seen and assessed in person. Rather than trying to work things out at home and worrying, the safest step you can take is to come in and be assessed.

Sterile, single-use instruments

The next marker is unseen but vital: cleanliness. In safe care, the instruments used are sterile, and wherever possible fully single-use — opened fresh for you and never reused. This is one of the strongest protections against infection, which is one of the real dangers of unsafe, back-street procedures. You have every right to expect this standard, and every right to ask about it.

A proper theatre, anaesthesia and monitoring

When a procedure is needed, it belongs in a proper operating theatre, not a back room. A safe setting means anaesthesia given by trained staff so that you are comfortable, your pulse, breathing and blood pressure monitored throughout, and the equipment and medicines kept ready in the rare event that anything needs attention. This quiet layer of safety is invisible when all goes well — and that is exactly the point. It is there so that, if it is ever needed, it is already in place.

Two routes, both supervised in person

There is more than one way an abortion may be carried out. Broadly, there is the medicine route, and there is a short procedure in theatre, the surgical route. Which one is right for you, and whether it is suitable at all, is a decision for the doctor after you have been assessed — never a choice to make alone from something you have read. The safe version of either one is supervised, in person, from start to finish.

Why anything unsupervised is unsafe

So why is unsupervised care unsafe? Because every single one of the protections above — the licensed setting, the doctor's judgement, the scan, the sterile instruments, the theatre, the monitoring and the follow-up — is missing. Medicine ordered by post, or an abortion arranged over a phone call with no examination and nobody watching over you, strips away the very things that make care safe. For this reason, we do not send any medicine by post or courier, and we do not carry out any abortion by phone. To receive any abortion service, you come to the hospital in Goa in person. A message or call to us can tell you whether treatment is feasible and guide your next step, but the treatment itself is always done here, with us, face to face.

Follow-up is part of the care

Safe care does not end when you leave the room. Proper abortion care includes follow-up — a check that everything has settled as it should, a chance to ask any questions on your mind, and, if and when you want it, a calm conversation about contraception so that the future stays in your hands. Being able to come back easily, close to home, is part of why in-person, local care matters so much.

What you can look for, and ask about

You do not need to be an expert to protect yourself. A few gentle questions tell you a great deal. Is this a hospital licensed for this care? Will a qualified doctor see me and scan me first? Are the instruments sterile and single-use? Is there a proper theatre, with anaesthesia and monitoring? Will there be a follow-up visit? Anywhere that answers these calmly and clearly is taking your safety seriously. Anywhere that avoids them, or offers to handle everything from a distance without seeing you, is not.
