A home pregnancy test detects a hormone made once a pregnancy settles in the womb. Test from the day your period is due, using morning urine. A faint line within the stated time usually means pregnant. A negative can simply be too early, so retest after a few days, and see a doctor if your period stays missing.
How does a home pregnancy test work?
If your period is late and you are holding a test, or about to take one, you may feel anxious and very alone. It helps to understand what the test is actually doing. A home pregnancy test looks for a hormone that your body begins to make once a pregnancy has settled into the lining of the womb. In the first days the level of this hormone is low, and then it rises quickly over the days that follow.
That single fact explains almost every confusing result. Test too soon, and there may not be enough hormone for the test to pick up. Test a little later, and the same pregnancy shows clearly. Home tests work well when they are used at the right time and exactly as the packet describes, but no home test can tell you where the pregnancy is, or how far along it is. Only a doctor and an ultrasound scan can do that.
When is the right time to take a test?
The most reliable time to test is from the day your period is due, or once it is late. If your cycle is regular, that day is easy to work out. If your periods come at different times each month, count from the longest cycle you usually have, or simply test, and if the result is negative, test again a few days later.
A few simple habits make the result more trustworthy. Use the first urine of the morning, when the hormone is most concentrated. Avoid drinking large amounts of water just before testing, because that dilutes the urine. Check the expiry date on the packet, follow the instructions step by step, and read the result within the time the packet states — no sooner and no later.
What does a faint line mean?
A faint line is one of the commonest worries women bring to us. If a faint line appears within the reading time given on the packet, it usually means the test has picked up the pregnancy hormone. Very often it simply means you have tested early, while the level is still low. Test again after a couple of days with morning urine, and the line will usually be clearer.
There are two things to keep in mind. First, a faint mark that appears only after the test has been left lying for a long time, as it dries, can mislead you, which is why the reading time matters. Second, sometimes a very early pregnancy does not continue, and a faint positive is followed by a period and then a negative test. This is common, it is not caused by anything you did, and it is worth letting a doctor know if it happens.
Why can a test be negative when you are pregnant?
A negative result can simply be too early. You may have released an egg later than usual this month, so your period is not truly late yet, and any pregnancy is younger than you think. Diluted urine, or reading the test before the stated time, can also give a negative result. If your period still has not come, test again after a few days.
If the test stays negative and your period is still missing, it is time to see a doctor rather than keep buying tests. Many things can delay a period, including stress, a change in weight, thyroid problems and polycystic ovary syndrome, and a doctor can check for these calmly and quickly.
When should you see a doctor?
See a doctor if your test is positive, if the result is unclear, or if your period stays missing despite negative tests. Some signs need a doctor straight away, whatever the test says: pain low down on one side of your tummy, bleeding together with pain, feeling faint or dizzy, or pain in the tip of your shoulder. These can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy grows outside the womb, usually in a tube. That is an emergency, and it needs urgent care at a hospital.

What if the test is positive and the pregnancy was not planned?
If your test is positive and this was not planned, take a breath. You do not have to decide everything this minute, but it does help to take the next step soon. That step is a visit to a doctor and an ultrasound scan, which confirms that the pregnancy is inside the womb and shows how far along it is. Whatever you are considering — continuing, not being sure yet, or ending the pregnancy — you deserve clear, kind and unhurried advice.
