Your questions
When should we see a fertility specialist?
If you have been trying for a baby for a year without success, or for six months if the woman is over 35, it is time to get checked. See a doctor sooner if periods are very irregular, if PCOS or endometriosis is known, or after past pelvic infections or surgery.
What tests will we need?
Usually a few blood tests and an ultrasound for the woman, to check ovulation and egg reserve, and a semen analysis for the man. Both partners are tested at the start, because a cause can be on either side.
What is the difference between IUI and IVF?
In IUI, washed sperm is placed inside the uterus at the time of ovulation, and fertilisation happens inside the body. In IVF, eggs are collected and fertilised with sperm in the laboratory, and an embryo is placed back in the uterus. The doctor will advise which suits you. How IUI works.
My husband's semen report is abnormal. What now?
Many sperm problems can be treated or worked around, depending on the cause. Treatment may include medicines, lifestyle changes, IUI, or IVF with ICSI. Where no sperm is seen in the semen, a procedure called micro-TESE can sometimes find sperm in the testis. Read about male infertility.
What is AMH, and what does a low AMH mean?
AMH is a blood test that gives an idea of how many eggs are left in the ovaries. A low AMH means a smaller egg reserve, not that pregnancy is impossible; it often means acting sooner. The doctor will explain your options. Read about IUI for low AMH.
Can PCOS stop me from getting pregnant?
PCOS can make ovulation irregular, which makes pregnancy harder. Many women with PCOS conceive with treatment such as lifestyle changes and medicines that help ovulation, with IUI or IVF if needed. Read about PCOS.
Is IVF safe? Are there risks?
IVF is a well-established treatment, but like any medical treatment it has risks, for example a higher chance of twins and, rarely, bleeding or infection after egg collection, or an over-reaction of the ovaries to the medicines. The doctor explains these before you start.
Can you tell us our chances before we start?
Only after the doctor has seen both partners' test results. Chances depend on age, the cause and your reports, so we explain what is realistic for you personally rather than quoting general figures.
How much does IUI or IVF cost?

Where do we go for consultations and treatment?
Consultations are held at our clinics in Panjim, Margao and Mapusa, and at Pai Hospital in Vasco. On treatment days that need the laboratory, we send a car to bring you and take you home again, free of cost.
