When is it safe to have sex after an abortion?

Why does the timing matter?

Many women want to know when they can be intimate again after an abortion, but feel too shy to ask. Please do not be embarrassed: it is a sensible health question, and your doctor will be glad you asked. The timing matters because your body needs a little time to heal. After an abortion, the neck of the womb, called the cervix, stays slightly open for a while, and the lining of the womb is renewing itself. During this time, germs can travel upwards into the womb more easily than usual, and an infection there is exactly what we want to prevent. Waiting a little gives the cervix time to close and the lining time to settle.

How long should you wait before having sex?

There is no single date that suits every woman, which is why we do not give a fixed number. As a general guide, we suggest waiting until your bleeding has settled and until you have had your follow-up check. At that visit, the doctor confirms that the abortion is complete, that the womb has healed well, and that there are no signs of infection. Once your doctor is satisfied and you feel ready, you can return to your usual intimate life.

Until then, keep anything out of the vagina. That means no sex, no tampons or menstrual cups, and no washing inside the vagina. Use sanitary pads instead; they are gentler, and they let you see how your bleeding is settling. Showers are fine, and you can usually return to gentle everyday activities as soon as you feel comfortable. Why is the follow-up check so important?

The follow-up visit is not a formality. It is how we make sure your body has truly healed, rather than guessing. If anything has not settled as expected, it can be picked up early, while it is still simple to treat. The doctor asks how you are feeling, checks on your bleeding, and, where needed, uses an ultrasound scan to confirm that the womb is empty. It is also a calm moment to ask anything on your mind, including questions about sex, periods and contraception, which many women find easier to raise face to face. Like all of your care, the follow-up is done in person at the hospital in Goa, in privacy.

How does the way the abortion is done affect healing?

Good healing begins with how the care itself is given. Every instrument we use is single-use and disposable, opened fresh from its sealed pack for you and never used on anyone else. That keeps the procedure clean, with no cross-contamination between patients, and cleanliness is one of the strongest protections against the infections that can slow healing.

If you have a surgical abortion, whether by suction or a D and C, it is done under real-time ultrasound guidance: the doctor watches your womb on a screen throughout. This lowers the risk of complications such as perforation, a small tear in the wall of the womb. It also shows the exact moment the womb is empty, so the procedure stops right there, with no unnecessary scraping (over-curettage). That helps protect the lining of the womb, both for healing now and for future pregnancies.

Can you get pregnant again straight away?

Yes, and this surprises many women. Fertility can return very quickly after an abortion, often before your next period arrives, so it is possible to become pregnant again soon, even before you feel back to normal. That is why we talk about contraception after an abortion straight away, ideally before you have sex again. A suitable method can often be started at the same time as your abortion care, without an extra trip. Options range from the daily pill to longer-acting methods that you do not have to think about every day. Condoms are a useful extra step, because they also help protect against infections passed on during sex.

Which signs mean you should call a doctor?

Please call us promptly, or seek care the same day, if you have a fever or chills, a bad-smelling discharge, pain in your lower tummy that is getting worse rather than better, or bleeding that becomes heavier instead of lighter. These can be signs of an infection or of something else that needs attention, and they are far easier to treat when caught early. Once you have healed, if sex is painful or causes bleeding, tell us as well. None of these are things to put up with quietly. If you are ever unsure whether something is normal, it is always fine to ask.

What if you do not feel ready?

Being ready in your mind matters as much as being healed in your body. Some women feel ready soon, and others need more time; both are completely normal, and there is no rush. If feelings of sadness, guilt or worry are getting in the way, it can help to talk about them, with your partner or with us. The first time after an abortion can bring up unexpected emotions, and that is nothing to be ashamed of. Whether you are married or unmarried, this is lawful care under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, and you will be treated with the same privacy and respect as every other woman.
