Lawful abortion care and fertility treatment in Goa, India, for patients from Qatar
Lawful, licensed, confidential. Termination of pregnancy at Pai Hospital is carried out lawfully under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 (as amended), at a licensed facility, by registered medical practitioners, within the limits and the certification that the Act requires. We do not carry out or offer sex determination of any kind, at any stage, for any reason. Your identity and your treatment are confidential.
Yes. Termination of pregnancy is lawful in India under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, with the same rules for a woman travelling from Qatar. At Pai Hospital in Vasco-da-Gama, Goa, it is carried out at a government-licensed facility by registered doctors, within the limits the Act sets, and in confidence. Fertility treatment is available here too.
Patients travel from Doha and elsewhere in Qatar to Pai Hospital for termination of pregnancy and for fertility treatment. A first consultation can be held by phone or WhatsApp before you book anything, so you understand what applies to you before you commit to the journey — and nothing about that conversation is shared with anyone at home.
Your visit stays between you and the hospital
Qatar's Indian community is large and, for many, a genuinely small world — one workplace, one apartment block, one social circle where news travels fast. For patients who call us from Doha, that closeness is usually the whole reason for looking outside the country at all. Goa is far enough away to be private, and close enough that a short trip is realistic.
Privacy is built into how the visit runs — who you meet, where you wait, what is written down and where it is kept. Nothing about your visit is discussed outside your care team or shared with anyone, not family, not an employer, not a caller who says they know you. Many of the women treated here are unmarried, which is entirely lawful in India and changes nothing about the care you are given.
Why Goa
Women come to us from Doha and from the towns around it: Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah, Lusail, Umm Salal, Al Khor and Mesaieed are all well within a 200 km drive of Hamad International Airport in Doha.
Doha to Goa is a flight of roughly three and a half hours where a service exists — flight times change and connections are not always direct, so check current routes before you book anything.
The law is different here, and it is worth understanding on its own terms rather than assuming. We are not in a position to advise you on Qatar's own law — that is a matter for a professional there if you need to know exactly where you stand under it. What we can tell you plainly is what is lawful in India, under India's own Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act — see what is lawful in India for the full picture.
One hospital, one consultant. The doctor you speak to on the phone is the doctor who examines you and who operates, in the same building — the operating theatre and the embryology laboratory are both at Vaddem, Vasco-da-Gama.
What happens at Pai Hospital
A government MTP licence, and three registered doctors
The operating theatre is licensed by the government specifically for termination of pregnancy. Where the law requires a second doctor's opinion before a more advanced pregnancy can be certified, Pai Hospital has three registered doctors on staff, so that opinion is given here, on the same visit.
The scan is done here, on the day you arrive
The ultrasound that confirms gestation is done in the hospital's own department, by its own doctors, in the same building — not booked elsewhere, and not waited on.
Real-time sonographic guidance, and disposable instruments throughout
Where a surgical procedure is needed, the doctor watches the uterus on the ultrasound screen for the whole of it. Every instrument and consumable that touches you is single-use.
Facilities at Pai Hospital
Everything your care needs is in one building, so nothing is sent out and you are not passed between addresses:
- An operating theatre licensed by the government for termination of pregnancy under the MTP Act.
- The hospital's own ultrasound department, so the scan that confirms gestation is done on the day you arrive.
- Three registered doctors on staff, so the second opinion the Act requires at a more advanced stage is given on the same visit.
- Surgical procedures under real-time sonographic guidance, with 100% disposable, single-use instruments and consumables.
- Admission and recovery facilities: most terminations are day-care, with a short stay where it is needed.
- 24-hour cover for emergencies, deliveries and surgeries.
- An embryology laboratory in the same building, for fertility treatment.
- Pick-up by car within Goa, which can be arranged for you.
More detail is on the hospital infrastructure page.
Planning the trip itself
A journey from Doha needs its own plan — what to send before you fly, what needs you here in person, and how many days to allow. What a treatment trip actually involves sets it out in full. The figure you are given, once you have been examined here, is a precise, itemised cost — hospital, medical, pharmacy and laboratory — and it does not move afterwards; see cost of abortion in India. The figure is for the method chosen: if medicines do not complete the abortion and a short procedure is needed afterwards, the cost of that procedure is added, and the payment already made for the medicines is not refunded or carried over. For a surgical abortion, which is done under anaesthesia, our policy is that you come with a responsible adult (a friend, a relative or anyone unrelated, above 18 years of age) who can take you home afterwards.
What to bring with you
- Your passport (and, if you are not an Indian citizen, your Indian visa or OCI card) as proof of identity.
- The date of your last menstrual period, and any pregnancy test or scan report you already have.
- Any other medical reports, a list of the medicines you take, and any allergies.
- Your blood group report, if you have one.
You do not need a letter from your husband or family. For an adult woman the law asks only for her own written consent, given here on the consent form the MTP Rules prescribe.
Sooner is simpler
For termination of pregnancy, treatment is smaller and safer the earlier it happens — less intervention, quicker recovery, and more of the options still open, including the medication route, which stops being suitable early. The stages the MTP Act sets out are on their own page, and your dates decide which one applies to you. See also the full abortion services overview.
An ectopic pregnancy is not a termination
An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that has settled outside the womb, usually in a fallopian tube. It is a different medical condition, and an emergency, not a termination — which is exactly why the arrival scan is always done first. Read about ectopic pregnancy.
Pick-up by car once you land in Goa
Pick-up by car can be arranged. The hospital runs its own cars: once you are in Goa, a car can collect you from the airport, from wherever you are staying, or from elsewhere in the state, and bring you back afterwards.
Our commitment to privacy and confidentiality
Your privacy is protected by Indian law, not only by our own practice. Under section 5A of the MTP Act, the name and other particulars of a woman whose pregnancy has been terminated may not be revealed, except to a person authorised by law. For many patients travelling from Qatar, this is a subject nobody at home discusses at all, so the whole visit is built around discretion, from the first WhatsApp message to the flight home:
- Nothing about your visit is shared with your family, your husband or partner, your employer or your sponsor.
- If someone telephones the hospital asking about you, we do not confirm that you are a patient.
- Only the medical facts needed for safe care are written down, and your records are kept confidentially at the hospital, with access limited to the clinical team caring for you.
- You can ask to be seen discreetly, without sitting in the general waiting area.
- Your records are yours: you can ask for a copy, and nothing is sent to anyone else unless you ask for it in writing or the law requires it.

Can I have a first consultation before I fly from Qatar?
Yes. You can call or WhatsApp us before you fly, and send any reports or scans you already have. On the phone we can tell you whether an abortion is possible in your situation and help you plan your visit; we do not give any treatment or medicines over the phone.
Is abortion legal in India for a woman from Qatar?
Yes. The MTP Act does not distinguish by nationality or residency. Your own dates and medical situation decide your care, assessed here by a registered doctor at a government-licensed facility.
What documents should I bring from Qatar?
Your passport (and your Indian visa or OCI card if you are not an Indian citizen), the date of your last menstrual period, and any pregnancy test, scan or other medical reports you already have.
Do I need my husband's consent for termination of pregnancy in India?
No. Indian law requires only your own consent as an adult woman, regardless of where you live.
I am unmarried. Will that be a problem in Goa?
No. Unmarried women are fully entitled to this care in India, and are treated here exactly as anyone else is.
How long is the flight from Doha to Goa?
Roughly three and a half hours where a service runs. Flight schedules change, so check current routes and timings before you book.
Can a car pick me up at the airport in Goa?
Yes. Pick-up by car can be arranged from the airport or from wherever you are staying in Goa, and back afterwards.
Is my visit kept confidential?
Yes. Under section 5A of the MTP Act your name and particulars may not be revealed except to a person authorised by law, and nothing about your visit is discussed outside your care team or shared with anyone, whether you are travelling from Goa, from elsewhere in India, or from abroad.
