IUI also called Intra Uterine insemination is a fertility treatment by which sperm is placed in to the uterine cavity of the woman by an infertility specialist. IUI or artificial insemination is used in cases of male factor infertility in which there is low sperm count or poor sperm motility. These conditions are medically called oligospermia- less sperm, azoospermia- no sperm or asthenospermia- slow sperm. IUI may also be used in cases where the shape of the sperm is abnormal, medically called teratospermia. In cases of sperm count abnormalities, these conditions may occur singly or in combination. IUI may also be done in couples in whom the woman has difficulty in ovulation like in PCOS or in other types of anovulation disorders. IUI is also a good treatment in couples with unexplained infertility. These are special cases of infertility that comprise 10 percent of infertile population. In unexplained infertility, the preliminary test reports are normal and the cause of infertility is mostly unknown for the time being. During unexplained infertility, IUI may be combined with fertility medications (either tablets, injections or both) to stimulate the ovaries to produce more eggs. This increases the number of eggs available for fertilization and helps to improve pregnancy rate.
IUI is a very common fertility treatment. IUI is generally painless.
How does IUI work?
The husband will usually produces the sperm sample in the fertility clinic or he may collect it from home. The sperm sample will be then processed in the IUI lab using special machines. The sperm sample is washed and cleaned so that the healthy sperms are separated from the semen plasma. Finally a concentrate is produced of healthy sperms. This concentrate is loaded in to an IUI syringe and is inseminated in to the woman’s uterine cavity. The sperms then travel through the fallopian tubes towards the eggs.
The timing of the IUI or artificial insemination is very important. IUI (Intra uterine insemination) has the highest success rate if the IUI sperms are in the woman’s reproductive system just prior to ovulation (egg release).
