Out of 100 cases, 30 cases have male infertility, 30 cases have female infertility, 30 cases have mixed infertility and 10 cases have unknown factor infertility. Male infertility is often due to low sperm count or oligospermia, azoospermia or no sperm count or due to abnormal sperms or teratospermia. Many a times there may be a combination of one or more types of abnormalities in sperm count and morphology.
Infertility doctors and gynecologists may often suggest IUI as one of the basic treatments for sperm related infertility. Research also shows that IUI works very well in patients affected with female factor infertility like PCOS, anovulatory disorders (irregular periods) and unknown factor infertility (infertility with all normal reports).
In IUI, sperm sample is collected from the husband and processed in specialized machines. These processes help in removing debris, impurities and dead sperms and keep alive normal sperms. The sperm sample after processing is taken in an injection and is injected in to the uterus of the woman. The IUI treatment lasts for a few minutes and is relatively painless.
Before the couple decides to undergo IUI, a fertility assessment of the husband and wife is necessary. Fertility assessment may include blood tests, hormone tests, and ultrasound tests. The IUI success rate is about 15 to 20 percent.
